The 'dere' family includes several archetypes. Tsundere characters alternate between cold and warm behavior. Kuudere characters are outwardly calm and reserved. Dandere characters are shy and quiet until they open up.

Yandere is the most extreme of these types because the emotional intensity crosses into harmful territory. This makes yandere routes high-stakes and often polarizing among players.

Visual novels are one of the best formats for yandere storytelling because route isolation lets writers explore the archetype fully without derailing other paths. A yandere route can go to dark places while the rest of the game stays lighter.
